The textile industry was probably the first in the Calderdale area to be industrialised and the earliest buildings which we would identify as factories were developed to house particular machinery and processes. Those built for spinning and weaving are the easiest to identify. Spinning was the first to leave a domestic setting in the mid 18th century but it was nearly 50 years later that weaving moved to the factory. Even then the domestic hand weaving tradition continued right through to the mid 19th century and in some cases beyond. |
